Moving the cursor up and down only

If you don't want the cursor to move to the left and right (sideways) hold down the left mouse button and hold down the "shift" key while dragging the trace line up and down.
This will allow you to make adjustments without a "Q" control.

Remove the "show tips" menu at the bottom

When you initially start Har-Bal you may see the "show tips" bar at the bottom of your screen.

If you want to remove it go to options and choose "show tips" to remove the checkmark.

I've made changes and want to get back to the initial state

Good question 1. You can use the ctrl-z option, but this is the slow method and is only appropiate for "undoing" your moves one at a time. 2. The fastest method is to click on the button, third from the left on the top named "create a new eq filter". This will immediately take yo...

What is the purpose of the three lines in Har-Bal?

The three traces are inexorably connected so that if you apply a filter to one that same filter is applied to all. To have a clear idea on what the difference is between the peak and the average spectrums requires a bit of an understanding on how the spectrum is measured in the first place. The way ...

How do I get all the songs on my album to be equally loud

Find a similar CD in your genre and use it as a guide for the loudness of your album. Create a .anl file by simply opening it Har-Bal as a .wav file. You can use the "match loudness" feature in Har-Bal as a reference for your limiter to determine loudness. When using this feature write dow...

The beauty of the Har-Bal shelving tool

On the top right hand side of the menu bar there are two buttons. They are called the low shelving cursor and high shelving cursor respectively. For instance, you have your bass region nice and tight and you realize upon listening that you may need to add a little more bass. Which frequency should y...

Another Success Story...

I've always found it intriguing how by simply changing the balance of the spectrum in a completely static fashion (ie. fixed frequency response) you can end up with a recording that sounds more dynamic! I guess it all boils down to the intricacies of psychoacoustics. I remember the time (prior to a ...

Another Success Story...

THAT IS FANTASTIC!!! Now you are beginning to understand where a total track fits into the spectrum. It makes all the difference in the world. Now lets take it one step further. Now that you know how an entire track should appear, how about looking at individual instruments. Lets say you needed to h...

David You should apply Har-bal only before final limiting. If you want the dance tracks to pump add compression to both the drum and bass track and then apply compression to the overall mix. Here are some settings to start with. Drums Attack 1-5/Release 10/Threshold -15/Ration 5:1 to 8:1/Knee Hard B...

Different Strokes

The more compressed a track the closer the green and yellow line will be, though not through any simple relationship. By that I mean you won't be able to tell how much a track has been compressed by looking at the space between peak and average because it also depends on the nature of the music and ...
