Mac OS Sierra and HARBAL

We have just released a maintenance build for Har-Bal 3.0. This was necessitated by the release of MacOS Sierra in which Apple has broken the default behaviour of sliders from their previous OS release. In the past when sliders were created they were initialised as vertical or horizontal based on th...

Re: Mac OS Sierra and HARBAL

For your information, this is indeed a problem created by Apple! In their original implementation of sliders the determination of whether it is vertical or horizontal was done automatically by observing whether the height was greater than the width. They have now altered the behaviour so that you ha...

Re: .anl files

If you want feedback regarding the sort of processing you might try with Har-Bal for a given track just email us (or sound cloud us) an mp3 of it that we can then evaluate. We'll happily take a look at it.

cheers,

Re: Filter overlay

What you suggest (ie. modify the target material toward the source filter but using manual adjustment) makes no sense because a target analysis is a "spectrum" but a filter is a frequency response so to say that you want to adjust the spectrum towards a particular frequency response is non...

Well, I don't see how I can help there. Seems like you need a feature in your Target EQ to load a reference curve.

Re: Use HarBal's EQ Matching as VST (or export values to EQ

Following on from my skepticism on your suggestion, looking at the documentation for fruity loops parametric EQ 2 I see it is a 7 band parametric EQ. As such, it can only approximate any frequency responses you can realize with Har-Bal, so again, a simple export of the data pertaining to the frequen...

Re: Use HarBal's EQ Matching as VST (or export values to EQ

If I export all that is used to make up a Har-Bal frequency response I think you and everyone else will find it far from easy to work with. You seem to be under the misapprehension that it is just a bunch of parametric EQ edits. It isn't. The frequency responses in Har-Bal are composed of edit point...

Re: Use HarBal's EQ Matching as VST (or export values to EQ

Simple answer is you can't. The best you can do is to write down the edit parameters you see in the Har-Bal status line when creating the filter and use those as parameters for your plugin. If you don't follow then go to har-bal select the gain tool click and drag as if you are doing an edit and the...

Re: New Har-Bal User: Can't Get Good RMS Levels!

Yes, that's correct.

Short duration transients (a few milliseconds or less) should not pose much of a problem for the Har-Bal limiter, but yes, to get a high RMS level you'll find it much easier if you compress the drum tracks before mixing.

Re: New Har-Bal User: Can't Get Good RMS Levels!

There's nothing particularly magical in the algorithm except that (1) it works slowly enough to preserve short term transients and (2) it works in the log RMS domain rather than the RMS domain (ie, the envelope detector works on a dB signal not an RMS level signal) which makes it better at tracking ...

Re: Record Only the EQ Changes (without Volume)

"Record As" takes into account the settings of the EQ and Dynamics buttons. If you want to render with EQ only the have EQ toggled on and dynamics toggled off.

Re: Any plans for a plugin version?

Har-Bal is never likely to be a plugin. It's too limiting. The deep level of processing in Har-Bal 3 is simply not possible in a plugin framework and we've only scratched the surface of what's possible. That a why a plugin is not under consideration. The only time I'll ever be tempted to bother with...

It's on the list but not on a high priority. There is a bunch of other things I want done before making Har-Bal a plugin host.

Re: PLEASE Share your workflow in HB

My workflow is purely Har-Bal using the techniques outline in the manual. I don't believe mastering should be "adding" anything to a track but just bring out what is already there. Hence using analog gear (tubes etc) that add through non-linearity is simply a no-no to me. It isn't the job ...

Re: Menus vs. Buttons to See Changes

I have a great disdain for "commercial loudness" and think most recorded material these days suck because of it. Mainly because of that, Har-Bal was never designed for loudness maximisation, at least not the extent pursued by commercial labels. The short answer is therefore, you'll probabl...
