Understanding how HarBal spectrum carving works

Hi guys, Just want to quickily understand how the spectrum carving works. If I have say a 3 minute mix that has a good spectrum from Har-Bal point view and then I arbitrarily added a screaming vocals that lasted about maybe 2 seconds. The vocals peaks at 2-3KHz way off. Now, from the Har-Bal analysi...

Thanks Earle. I currently now has a slight ear infection, so listening to bassy stuff is not going to be accurate at all. So, they both sounded similar. But, visually looking at both via HarBal, the first graph seems to have more room for distortion rhythm guitars. Thanks, again. These 2 shall serve...

Drums and Bass submix suggestion/help.

Hi guys, I've got 2 questions: - 1. The easy question...As the current IntuitQ is not perfect for doing submix or individual tracks, will ver 2.2 be helpful in this area? Especially for drums + bass sub mix? 2. I'm currently remixing some tracks and I'm starting from the root of the mix, which is th...

WAV to MP3 dithering?

HI,

Was wondering if one were to do the project in 24 bit WAV format, say he imports it into SoundForge, and then save it as 192Kbps MP3 (16 bit) would dithering be any good?

Someone told me that when you go from WAV to MP3, dithering is irrelevant?

Harbal stilll rocks!

Paavo, Just to wrap things up, I remix again and this time the IntuitQ works well. The difference from the past is due to exactly what you pointed out. ...there are just some extreme peaks that really should be sorted out within the mix and not at HarBal level. IntuitQ works!!! if the mix was not ex...

Mind my lack of knowlege of hip hop music...especially the RMS level. HarBal folks may disagree with me here, as they do have a built in limiter within their app...but from my experience and also from other forums, Voxengo Elephant is a good limiter for max loudness music like dance, pop and hip hop.

Hi, Multiband compression is really a compression mechanism. A limiter has very diff functionality as a compressor. Thus, multi band compression is really outside the scope of HarBal. True, you may not need to use multi band compression...but msot peopel that I know uses it. Same goes with limiter.....

The current intuitQ algorithm is biased and does not work well for sub-mixes. The implementation I'm currently working on works very well on sub-mixes but it is still in development and won't be out for a month or two. I'd suggest processing sub-mixes manually rather than using intuitQ. Cheers, Paa...

Trina, You can reduce interfearance by using balanced 1/4" TRS cables instead of regular unbalanced 1/4" cables. This is true if your env has got many cables and external devices like air cond, microwave, etc. Paavo, I found out it's not just the electric guitar that's causing ear fatigue ...

It's no wonder they say the hardest part is mixing (not recording & not mastering) If you could be so kind, I did another mix. This time, the bass and drums are tone down a little and the electric guitar, well, I created a valley of -3.25db at 2.9KHz. However when I view the entire mix, it looks...

By the way, I have prototyped a new and improved IntuitQ algorithm that is so close to spot on it isn't funny. It even works for restoration work and individual instruments. It'll probably take 4-6 weeks before I'm ready for beta though. Hope you enjoy it when it is ready for release. Cheers, Paavo...

Jess, Take a look at the rock.anl reference file supplied with Har-Bal. That is a spectrum analysis of "Learning to Fly" by "The foo fighters". You should note that the spectrum is pretty much flat from 50Hz up to around 2kHz at which point it starts rolling off fairly gently. T...

Thanks for your feedback. You're right, it causes ear fatigue. My guitar comes from a Line 6 Guitar POD. It has 3 knobs. The middle being the lowest. I shall turn down the treble and compensate them with the middle. The EQ settings for the guitars were mainly influence from this article http://www.d...
