Which meter are you watching -- the input meter or the gain meter?har-bal wrote: I started increasing the release knob until the meter on the compressor was moving in time to the tempo of the song.

Thanks for the input. And, you're right . . . I did have it turned around -- not what I meant to say. Sorry about that.DuncJF wrote:@ tcatzere
If I read your post right, I think you have your understanding of compression the wrong way round.

Re: Lol! Gosh Earle what did you do?
Just to confirm my understanding, when it comes to compression ratios, isn't it true that the smaller the ratio (e.g., 2:1 vs 4:1), the bigger and fuller the effect (more compression)?har-bal wrote: Turned the ratio to 2. I rarely use more than two.

Re: How do you get "punch"?
Thanks, Paavo, for the insight. Actually, I kind of wondered if that might not be a factor -- the missing ingredient. I'll have to play around with that a little. -Tom

How do you get "punch"?
What are the key components to getting a real snap and punchy crispness in a recording? I'm thinking along the lines of the Disco sound of the early 80's?

Waves Stereo Imager
Hi Earle, What do you know about the Waves S1 Stereo Imager -- is it a good investment? I know there are lots of plugins for correcting stereo image issues, so I was just wondering what makes this one stand out from the others? Also, I noticed from a screen shot of the S1 that it had both "Asym...

Sound level meter (I like this one) Set the weighting to "A" and the response to FAST. Set the meter to 85dBs Thanks for the input, Earle. Interesting you mentioned the SPL meter. Before receiving your response, I pretty much concluded that that would probably be about my only option -- s...

Re: RMS Levels
You will find the best explanation here: http://www.getmastered.com/techinfo.html Earle Hi Earle, I read the info at the link you provided. I guess the simple answer to my question is "no," not all RMS levels are created equally. So, this leads to a followup question . . . I have a projec...

RMS Levels
Earle, Are RMS levels fairly accurate regardless of genre or processing? As an example, if I had a track with some decent dynamics and a compressed version of the same track -- and I adjusted the levels of both versions so that they each had an average RMS of -12dB, would the perceived level be the ...

Re: Eq first
Some like to re-eq after compression to repair any spectral distortions .... . I guess the last sentence of your comment is what I had in mind. I know Earle (and most others) feel compression should follow eq. However, with this somewhat new approach to eq-ing, I was wondering if using compression ...

EQ vs. Compression???
Does the very nature of Empathetic EQ change the order of using it with compression (EQ/Compression vs. Compression/EQ)?
