Correct method for EQ Matching

While we don't usually encourage this practice, below is the correct method for matching your EQ to a reference track. When you are matching to a reference file in Har-Bal, only match the starting and ending frequencies of YOUR track. In other words if your song is between the range between 60Hz and...

Re: Mastering Tutorial Question

I've been studying the Mastering Tutorial and can't seem to figure out the Wave Linear Phase Mulitiband part of the Tutorial. I understand how to follow the steps, but not the "whys". In particular, Figures 11, 12, and 13. - In figure 11, we pull the master threshold down until the squigg...

Hello Paavo and Earle, where can I get a level meter like in the Tutorial Figure 17? I did not find it in the Waves product line?! Possibly any other good tip? If possible with a link. Thanks. Cheers. Petr Petr The level meter in Fig 17 is included when you purchase Wavelab. You already have it if ...

Multi-band compression can work well because it can mitigate the issue of one instruments envelope modulating another but only if they occupy different parts of the spectrum. I would say it is probably most helpful in the case where one or two instruments dominate the remainder and you wish to cont...

Re: Dynaudio BM6A MkII Monitors

Anyone have any experience with these: Dynaudio BM6A MkII I think that they are relatively new - as there was a previous model. I'm looking for moderately priced near-field monitors. I already have a sub that I occasionally use. I have not used them but I did find a review through the Audio Search ...

Re: Hardware vs. Softward

Earle In your opinion, are there any software (plug-in) compressors that come close to hardware units - for example, your Avalon 747? In my work at present I'm only able to work in the digital domain. I would really value your insight on this as you're one of the few ME's I've come across that does...

Re: compression issue

Hi Earle, During the mastering phase, for sure it depends on the material but, generally speaking; after correcting the spectral content of the mix with Har-Bal, is it more preferable to use a soft-knee compressor with a gentle overall compression ratios such as 1.1 to 2, threshold set around 20-30...

Re: masking

.... My advice is this: If you are attempting to de-mask and you it is plainly obvious go back to the original mix and make the correction. Cheers Earle Thanks Earle. It seems that after balancing the spectral content of the mix with HarBal, possibly it's better to use a wideband compressor instead...

Re: RMS Levels

You will find the best explanation here: http://www.getmastered.com/techinfo.html Earle Hi Earle, I read the info at the link you provided. I guess the simple answer to my question is "no," not all RMS levels are created equally. So, this leads to a followup question . . . I have a projec...

Re: masking

Hi Earle, Waves LMB compressor features an adaptive de-masking process which seems not available in wideband compressors, and other multiband comp's, to my knowledge. Is there a particular technique for dynamic de-masking purpose by using a wideband compressor after harbalizing the track, or is it ...

Re: RMS Levels

Earle, Are RMS levels fairly accurate regardless of genre or processing? As an example, if I had a track with some decent dynamics and a compressed version of the same track -- and I adjusted the levels of both versions so that they each had an average RMS of -12dB, would the perceived level be the...
