Running Har-Bal on Vista and Windows 7

If DEP (Data Execution Prevention) is enabled for all programs Har-Bal does not run on Vista. This is due to Armadillo / Software Passport (the software used to control licensing of Har-Bal) and not Har-Bal itself. To resolve this problem, log in as administrator and manually configure DEP to allow Har-Bal to run without DEP protection.

The following procedure describes how to manually configure DEP on the computer:

1. Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then click OK.
2. On the Advanced tab, under Performance, click Settings.
3. On the Data Execution Prevention tab, use one of the following procedures:
• Click Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only to select the OptIn policy.
• Click Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select to select the OptOut policy, and then click Add to add the programs that you do not want to use the DEP feature.

4. Click OK two times.

NB. In future releases of Har-Bal this will no longer be an issue as we will not be using Armadillo / Software Passport for licensing.

Further to this post, should you find that the option to opt out of DEP is greyed out and inaccessible you can bypass this issue using the following. From the command line (or the Run... menu on the start menu) do the following:

bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOn
bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx optin

Then re-boot, or for a more secure approach,

bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOn
bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx optout

and then use the DEP dialog (previous post) to add Har-Bal to the opt out list, and re-boot.

For future compiles, you can force DEP to be off as of VS2008. ;) You can also easily get UAC to auto-grab administrative rights through merging a simple manifest, if you ever need to have that and don't want to deal with UAC SDK. PM me if you want it and I'll send you the manifest.

If you globally disable (which I think is not possible under 64 bit windows, or maybe it is for 32 bit apps) then it removes one level of protection from viruses.

However, if you only disable it for Har-Bal it only leaves the door open for a virus in Har-Bal and nothing else. Provided you obtain your Har-Bal from a legitimate source (ie. us) then there's no possibility of a virus in Har-Bal. If its wares then anything is possible.

In any case, as I've mentioned previously, the next major release of Har-Bal will not be using Software Passport so this problem will go away.

regards,

Paavo.

I'm looking for a new Lap Top Computer. Vista is the main system for Windows if you want 3Gb or more. (XP is available on Computers with 1Gb or less.) I want at least 3 Gb.

When you roll out your next Gen Har Bal are we current owners entitled to the upgrade for Vista? When is it due out?
Thanks,

Lucky

When the next version is released you will be entitled to a "like for like" upgrade for free. By that, I mean the next version will, in all likelihood, be available in two versions, a light one with similar level of functionality as current Har-Bal and a full featured version with much more functionality. The light version will be a free upgrade. We are reserving the right to charge a nominal fee for the high end version (say $10 or so).

Can't give you a release date as yet. I'm right in the midst of debugging the new filtering code. There's still much work to be done. When I have the core up and running I'll be in a better position to think about a release date.

regards,

Paavo.
