Sound sculpture

Hi, y'all!

This summer I've been mixing several songs of a band in which everybody really likes to occupy the lower part of the frequency chart, thus causing, e.g., the guitars to clash with the bass. I've developed a nice and quick (I'm lazy) way of sculpting space for the bass like this.

1. Open the original guitar file in Har-Bal. Note the bass-heavy lower end of the spectrum.

2. Dish out all the sub bass (i.e., for the guitar, anything below 80 cycles).

3. Use the Intuit-Q-cursor (I told you I'm lazy...) to start evening out the rogue frequencies (for guitar, say, do it between 80-3500 cycles).

Image

4. Sculpt the spectrum so that there's a nice 6-12 dB deep slope from 'the guitar frequencies' to the 'bass frequencies' and an even distribution of the 'guitar frequencies'.

I've overdone it here so that you get the idea. Not always is this drastic a change necessary - but in my case, it's what the doctor ordered... :)
