The average RMS levels you have indicated here are -10..which is quite loud. I am not sure of the process you are using when burning to a cd. Let me ask you this:

Are your songs loud "before" you burn them to CD?

If you follow my process when I post it in this form your problems will no longer exist.

Let me get the process clear in my head.

1. You mix down your tracks to a two track.
2. You master the two track.
3. You get ready to burn it to a cd.

At this point tell me step by step what you are doing and give me the full name of the tool(s) you are using.

1. You mix down your tracks to a two track.
mixdown from cubase with no master effects present
balance in harbal, use "match loudness" against a comercial cd. back to 0.0 then record

2. You master the two track.
open it up with wavlab, use linmbwith an upward compessor of +3
set gains to 5 and range to -5
attacks between 85 -10 respectivly
rel 296-36 respectivly

insert l2 with a ceiling of 0.1 and a threshold of the match loudness figure in harbal
idr to 16bit
render

3. You get ready to burn it to a cd.

place rendered file in nero/win player and burn

One more thing. Can you send me a 30 sec wave file sample of your track. You can use the link at www.hdqtrz.com to send it

Thanks

Problem solved.. I received the file and opened it in Sound Forge. I then wennt to Tools/Statistics

Here are the RMS power numbers I am reading

Left Channel -25.58
Right Channel -25.93

This means the volume would be very low.. I believe that you are looking at a set of numbers that assigned to something else.otherwise tell me where you are reading your values from.

hey earle,
glad im not going crazy, wasn`t sure for a second though :?

i took these readings from the whole track within wavlab ....analysis > global analysis > analyze

could it be that certain parts of the track are much louder than others but is disguised within the linmb or something? the track does build with a lot more instruments cutting in as it goes on.
appreciate the time youve spent trying to figure this out

Would it be possible for you to either provide a link for me to download the track as an mp3 file. If not, can you just email me the entire file in mp3 format.

BTW: When you are analyzing the track in Wavelab using Global Analysis" tool are you looking at the column that states "average"?

This is where you should be getting your RMS power levels.

Lets go over something here.

1. Open Wavelab and import your file.
2. Click on your actual wave file and highlight your entire file by pressing ctrl-A
3. Click on the Analysis/Global Analysis button from the menu on top
4. Choose the loudness tab and make sure there is a checkmark in the RMS power box and click on Analyze.
5. What does the Average state in the RMS Power section

I am looking at the track you sent me and it is as follows:

Average -25.99bd -25.94db

Well, well Elliot

The average RMS value for the entire track is -10.XX as you stated earlier and is way loud on my system. So, we can surmise that the issue occurs somewhere at the CD burning stage in the software. This is very strange. Are there any options in the Nero cd burning software you have checked I.e. normalizing, peak checker..etc prior to burning.

I went one step further and burned your song to a cd. I use Nero Express and the song is still loud as heck.

Sounds like a job for Sherlock Holmes :)

ill give watson a call :)

it is really weird, ill check nero, i thought that normalising makes it louder, learn something new everyday :)
what ill do is extract the file back off the cd and check the levels from that.

dont know wheather you know or not but when your buning a cd, the track is done digitally so the soundcard wouldnt have any influence or would it?

thanks again (ill send a cdr in the post) ;)
