As a musician I find myself very very often calculating the grid into notes

That's a great idea!

I've also been thinking of uping the resolution of the spectrum from 1/6th octave to 1/12th octave so that you don't get any note smearing in the spectrum (ie. 1/12th octave can resolve all the notes in the diatonic scale).
