Dear Earle

The question is:-
Let us imagine we have a good mixing desk, computer,limiter and we are going for the fimal volume (Db).
Which of the following ways do you think sound good and why??

1. Computer rendering

2. From the computer to the mixing desk.and then back to the computer.

3. From the computer to the hard disk recorder.


Please what does your golden ears say, tothe golden question

You can use any of the above assuming you have a limiter in the chain. I must tell you though. Generally it isn't the limiter you use to increase the volume it is the compressor.. I normally use the limiter just to prevent the clipping.

When you are attempting to make a song louder you need to take a look at the peak to average ratio of the track. You can normally reduce the dynamic range using a compressor because it brings down the loud parts and increases the volume of the softer parts whereas a limiter keeps the loudest parts the same and brings up the softer sounds. (Did you get that?)

Can you see how you can get more loudness from a track by first using a compressor?
