Could someone please define "vocal resonance" and explain the resultant effects of it. Thanks.

Hi Tom,

From a technical stand point, I don't think there is any difference between a vocal resonance and any other. The difference lies in the fact that the voice is conveying information in the form of language and resonances can and do affect the intelligability of what the artist is singing. So I would define a vocal resonance as a resonance that has detrimental effects upon speach intelligability. Maybe someone else has a different definition but this is the way I see it.

Regards,

Paavo.

Think of it like any other acoustic instrument, in that the instrument has it's own resonating chamber where the fundamental frequency (or frequencies, in the case of say a piano or guitar) can interract with the overtones to produce a composite sound or resonance. The vocal resonating chambers are the head and chest.
