I have read most of the posts here and understand about using multiband compression after harbal. On my final mix I usually use a single band compressor on the master out before harbal. Then go the the multiband mastering steps earle has described. Is it recommeded to not do the single band compression at all?

I can't speak for Earle but I'd go for single band compression + HarBal + limiting and only go for multiband if it is aboslutely needed. I've heard too many recordings that have been ruined by MB compression.
