a good technique that i think works every time for is to use har bal as a "corrective EQ" e.g bring down some obvious peaks etc, low shelf the severe low end circa 30 - 40hz,
you now have a balanced track to work on.
Then now you may want to add a little "colour" to it, so using some wide Q boosts or dips by as little as 2db on another eq app, this adds some general "sonic shape" to the mix without disturbing the balance which you achieved in har bal.
If your not convinced then load the processed track into harbal and it should still be balanced.
